Burial/Void - 2021

At the beginning of the most recent Covid-19 lockdown in September 2021, my son asked me to play real life Minecraft in the backyard. We started digging a modest hole and as the hole grew deeper and wider I became facinated with this unearthed void.  A series of experiments followed where we drew the outlines of the respective holes with flames. When we turned the rectangular void into a cilindrical one we cut through the grave of one of my chickens, you can see the dimple in the layers of earth with clearly visible bones. We harvested clay from the bottom of the hole and fired little objects such as the little skull one depicted here.

Coinciding with this hole digging adventure was an outing to an eroded gorge nearby.
