		<description>Burial/Void - 2021
At the beginning of the most recent Covid-19 lockdown in September 2021, my son asked me to play real life Minecraft in the backyard. We started digging a modest hole and as the hole grew deeper and wider I became facinated with this unearthed void.&#38;nbsp; A series of experiments followed where we drew the outlines of the respective holes with flames. When we turned the rectangular void into a cilindrical one we cut through the grave of one of my chickens, you can see the dimple in the layers of earth with clearly visible bones. We harvested clay from the bottom of the hole and fired little objects such as the little skull one depicted here.
Coinciding with this hole digging adventure was an outing to an eroded gorge nearby.&#38;nbsp;

The journey documenting Australian ravens started with the generous donation of a telescopic lens by a friend (thank you Robert Agostino). Since my partner was already an avid bird watcher it did not take much for me to become obsessed with this airborne society revolving around our human one. Australia is a paradise for birds since there are barely any naturaly predators. I became particularly interested in photographing Australian ravens. It goes without saying that the image of a raven, let alone a murder of ravens is loaded with meaning in a global folklore and mythology. The are as meaningfull in stories of First Nation people in Australia as they are to people in the Western world. For me these images are a celebration of the relationships I have built, at distance of the focal lenght of my lens, with a few local chapters of these magical creatures.&#38;nbsp;
Most of the birds depicted here are part of a handfull communities I have been documenting over the years. Initially our relationship was one where I saw these animals as ominous bringers of bad news. As I grew closer to them a feeling of tenderness prevailed fuelled by little moments I was privileged to capture. My obsessive facination with these animals is a continuous thread through my day to day, commuting to work on my bike and spying continuously for black silhouettes perched on streetlights or soaring through the skies.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Uncontrolled - 2021
In the summer of 2020/2021 I stumbled upon a semi burnt out car dumped in a grassland on the perephery of an industrial estate. In my travels I have come across many burnt out cars. It is somewhat of a sport for people to steal a car and then set it a light somewhere remotely, this is often the cause of bushfire misery. In this case the interior of the car had not fully been consumed by flames leaving the it molten and drooping like a bothered candle.
 When I took the negatives into the darkroom I played around with separating out the images into a grid of smaller prints which I struggled to put back together resulting in an amalgam of constellations. Conceptually the element of demolition of the control unit of this vehicle speaks deeply to me.&#38;nbsp;

Grids - 2021 

A collection of images printed on silver gelatin paper in 2021. Each of these images in this set are unique artworks. In the darkroom the little section of these prints are developed with small discrepancies. The images are displayed in chronological order. My interest in this process started with a series of images I made of a blooming jasmine vine in one of the back alleys in our neighborhood. Through printing this image of the vine this fragmented way I wanted to guide the viewers’ perception of the detail contained in these images.&#38;nbsp;

Fossil Stacks 2020 - now
After collecting some fossils on a walk down the East coast of Australia guided by my father-in-law I developped an obsession with these magical stones. This obsession initially was a mix of the excitement of ‘the hunt’, the hammering of larger rocks to see what lies inside them and gazing and sheer amazement laying eyes on these objects buried for millions of years. 
My fascination revolves around the age of these stones and how in comparison the duration of my life as a human is so incredibly futile. I felt an immense sense of humility caressing one of these pertified organisms in my hands. I am well aware that pretty much everything in essence is a fossil related. Somehow I started stacking these fossils on top of each other during one of the first Covid-19 lockdowns. Making and documenting these fossil stacks felt like a monumental endeavor like I was balancing and playing with history and time itself.&#38;nbsp;

Read more about my obsession with fossils&#38;nbsp;here. As I was collecting these fossils I wanted to try to document them with pen and ink in the tradition of paleontologists before the invention of the camera. For me the challenge revolved around creating depth and volume in what is in essence a very monochromatic set of rocks.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>SAFE 2019&#38;nbsp;
This series is in essentially the plates which formed my first self published monograph. It is a body of work created between 2017 and 2019. Thematically it investigates the notion of place and family. A recurring theme is the structure of the fence, guarding, separating and obscuring what lies behind it. My facination with fences is ongoing, to me they are the penultimate colonial symbol. Australia before colonialism was a conglomerate of different Countries and farms transversable by anyone who choose to do so. Fences and borders put an end to this. I find endless joy in the desintegration of fence like structures.&#38;nbsp;

	D.H. Lawrence suggested a book lives as long as it is unfathomed. “Once a book is fathomed,'' wrote Lawrence, “once it is known, and its meaning is fixed or established, it is dead”. 
Presented with a sequence of images, the human mind instinctively works to penetrate, attach meaning and construct explanations. On first inspection, the banality in the black-and-white scenes captured in Wouter Van de Voorde’s Safe suggests this is a work that can be fathomed. On closer inspection, however, an engaging and ultimately abstract dialogue between the narrative elements of observation and the subversion of the representational emerges, opening up multiple lines of interpretation. Unexpectedly, in its simplicity, we find complexity. 
Hovering between night and day, Van de Voorde seamlessly blurs the distinction between the different temporalities of the events, people and places he presents. Rather than experiencing a series of logical interconnected occurrences, the viewer must reconcile and deliberate the varying viewpoints and their significance without the sequential link of chronology. It is as though the compositions themselves are manifestations of memory that transcend the circumstances of place and time. 
Scenes of suburbia featuring once functional but now dilapidated objects hint at a concealed, deeper meaning of objects and events. This intangible narrative characterised by ripples, disturbances and deviations from regularity is essentially what makes Van de Voorde’s work so charged. Punctuating the more narratively potent photographs are detailed botanical portraits and rock studies captured with compelling sensibility. It is in Van de Voorde’s more minimalist compositions, however, that we see a different kind of photograph emerge. In scrutinising forms and their imperfections, he subverts the representational, thus exposing and accentuating their pure form, in a dynamic discourse between form and space that echoes the work of conceptual art movements. 
The underlying thread of Safe is not apparent. The viewer discerns its subjects through subtle indirections and fleeting revelations. This elusiveness is not only central to Van de Voorde’s repertoire, but is crucial to the way in which the photographs play on our imagination. In this sense, the book meets Lawrence’s criterion; we do not succeed in uncovering its meaning, but instead satisfaction is derived through the exploration of the contexts and layers of interpretive possibilities it presents. 
Sara Jitjindar, 2019In our desire to define ourselves we place meaning on the landscape around us, we rationalise and commodify it; we tell stories of it and we claim ownership of it in neat package deals. We image it too, in paintings, in photographs, and through memory. Consider the history of landscape photography in Australia as a series of gross public overshares – self-serving attempts at rationalising and overcoming the land, tying sites to historical identity and collective memory which are understood through standards inherently tied to the lands own colonisation. These images hang on the walls of your doctors surgery, they welcome you into the country at the airport, coerce you to invest in your next holiday, and hang in the walls of our national institutions. Time and again the images we choose to re/produce act as masks for the ecocidal practices of land clearing, habitat loss, and erasure of Indigenous land ownership; and speak to the false nationhood that is foundational to our suburbs, and our way of living. These standards of beauty and definitions of being are begging to be unwritten – because if nothing else the landscape in Australia holds secrets, it presents lies and it holds truths. 
Wouter Van de Voorde traces secrets in his own relation to, and representation of, the land around him. Shot across the lands of the Dharawal, Boon Wurrung, Yuin and Ngunnawal peoples, as well as in France and Belgium (his country of birth) this body of images pictures relations and conversations over land. They suggest at the shared form of a thicket of trees, a wooden sword and a timber fence. Between a monolithic rock face and the shape of a national monument, or its reflection on water and the echo of three half submerged figures. This collection of images traces absence, and speak to the multiple histories places can hold. From fallen barriers, degraded and overgrown with weeds, to discarded objects, smashed windows, sunglasses on a trampoline. In many cases objects in the foreground obscure the read of the image, and make it difficult to work out what sits beyond. 
History is involved continuously in the making and remaking of ideas about place. Van de Voorde’s subjects range from the monolithic to the suburban, and repeat in form in unexpected ways. They speak to the passage of people over time, and through the attention they prescribe to the unspoken, they challenge dominant collective understandings and representations of the country we find ourselves on.

		<description>Home/Home - 2015

After my maternal grandfather passed away in 2015 I was drawn to document the house he and my grandmother lived in. Being a architect by training he had designed this house for his family of seven children to live in. My grandmother still lives in this enormous house to this day (2022).&#38;nbsp; 
In retrospect this little series touched at my altered sense of belonging as a Belgian living in Australia. Since my move to the other side of the world in 2008 my perception of Belgium, my home country, has changed gradually. After living in Australia for nearly fifteen years I am experiencing a disjointed sense of home even stronger. The rooms in this house still feel like a fundamental part of this Belgian identity but there is a disconnect which has only grown more palpable.

In this series I have juxtaposed landscapes nearby our house on Ngunnawal Country, Canberra, with places I grew up. I am both identities Belgian and Australian, it is a permanently broken identity.&#38;nbsp;
